Tony (Taff) Evans
We are sad to report the passing of Tony (Taff) Evans, another club stalwart whose loss will been keenly felt by all who knew him. for some years he had been suffering with a worsening dementia condition but was comfortable and being well looked after in his local care home.
Taff as his name suggests was a staunch and proud Welshman. A long-time employee of British rail, and it was his work with them that led to him being transferred to Reading, which then led to him joining Abbey rugby club well over 50 years ago.
During his long-playing career, he played for and captained a number of our club sides from 1st team down. Tony also managed the 1st team and was voted in as a clubman. Tony was a very active working and social member of Abbey and attended many of the social events held.
Tony was renowned for his cheeky smile and twinkle in his eye and for having penchant for the ladies! No names, no pack drill but when asked what was it that attracted the ladies to Taff one particular friend said with a knowing smile " he tells a girl what she wants to hear", Nuff said!
