It is with much sadness that I inform you the Abbey club members of the passing of Doreen Pawlett. Doreen was married to Peter Pawlett who was one of our founder members, so she’s been around Abbey for many, many years. Doreen was born in Grimsby on 21/9/1933 which is where her and Pete met whilst he was on National service there. She moved down to Reading when her and Pete married and went on to have 3 children, Elaine, Steven and Andrew who went on to bless them with 7 grandchildren, resulting in 11 great grandchildren, 5 of this dynasty went on to play at Abbey. Abbey Rugby Club was such a big part of Doreen’s life and being married to and being a founder member herself could be found up at Rosehill most weekends making sausage sandwiches for those volunteers building the clubhouse or marching up and down the field side by side with Pete removing the stones from the pitches. Like many from that era Doreen done her fair share of volunteering off the pitch as well, either in the kitchen or washing glasses. She was also a regular social member who could be found most weekends sat in the members bar with the likes of Olive and Dot. My first memory of Doreen was when I was a colt back in 1976 and she was known and loved by all the colts and very supportive of Pete who was the manager of the colts for many years. Doreen had the unenviable task of washing the colts dirty kit every week in her little twin tub washing machine which must have taken several loads and hours of her time. Over more recent years, ill health has meant that this final chapter of Doreen’s life has been spent in a local care home until she passed away on Tuesday 6th January.
Looking on the real positive side, Doreen is now back with the love of her life, Pete
RIP Doreen 🕊️
